Green Bioactives (GBL), a world-leader in the discovery, development and sustainable production of high-value natural products using its proprietary plant cell culture technology, announced that it has been awarded a significant grant from Innovate UK, in partnership with the University of Edinburgh
The grant, valued at £224,000 was awarded as part of Innovate UK’s, Engineering Biology Collaborative Research and Development programme and will now accelerate the development of an innovative biomanufacturing platform for high-value plant metabolite, specifically in personal care. These metabolites, which are essential for various industries including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food and agriculture, traditionally require extensive and resource-intensive extraction processes. GBL's platform promises a more sustainable and efficient alternative, reducing environmental impact and enhancing product accessibility.
GBL is at the forefront of biomanufacturing, leveraging cutting-edge technology to develop sustainable solutions that positively impact the world. With a mission to harness the power of nature, the company focuses on producing plant-based products through advanced and sustainable biotechnology.
Dr. David McElroy, CEO of Green Bioactives, expressed his enthusiasm about the grant award: "We are honoured to receive this prestigious grant from Innovate UK. This funding will be instrumental in advancing our research and development efforts, allowing us to create a truly innovative biomanufacturing platform. Our goal is to transform the way high-value plant metabolites are produced, making the process more sustainable and efficient. We are excited about the potential impact this project will have on various industries and the environment."
Innovate UK, the UK's innovation agency, supports business-led innovation across all sectors, technologies, and UK regions. The engineering biology collaborative research and development grant is designed to support projects that leverage engineering biology to develop new solutions and products, fostering collaboration between industry and research organisations.

About Green Bioactives:
Green Bioactives (GBL) is a world leader in the commercial development and production of plant natural ingredients using its pioneering plant cell culture platform. The company focuses on producing plant-based metabolites for various industries, including personal care,, cosmetics, nutraceutical, food, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries.
GBL’s platform provides much improved reliable and sustainable access to the diverse, and valuable library of bioactives generated by the world’s plant population. The bioactives produced by plants are vital to the industry, but often fail to produce sufficient yields or cannot be sustainably and economically harvested using traditional manufacturing approaches. The company is currently working with several world-leading partners in the development of plant natural products.
GBL’s capabilities span initial isolation of the bioactive producing plant cells through to the supply of the final purified product. GBL’s knowledge of plant vascular stem cells also provides the opportunity for the company to develop novel approaches that address the global need for sustainable, reliable and more economical ingredient production.
GBL was founded in 2019 and is currently based at Pentlands Science Park, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.
